From Deception to Truth: How Seeking Spirituality Leads to Christ

The story of the Magi and the star has always fascinated me. It intertwines astronomy, prophecy, and faith in a way that reflects God’s ultimate authority and sovereignty. While astronomy and even astrology were prominent in biblical times, God consistently warned His people to avoid divination, sorcery, and similar practices. Stories throughout Scripture reveal how these pursuits fall short when confronted with the power and truth of God.

For instance, in Exodus, God protected Moses and Aaron, showing His authority over Pharaoh’s sorcerers. Similarly, Joseph, through God’s wisdom, interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams, demonstrating that divine revelation surpasses human understanding. These accounts remind us that no matter how much wisdom or insight the world claims, true understanding comes from God alone.

The Magi and the Star: A Journey to Jesus

The story of the Magi, or wise men, is especially intriguing. Though they didn’t originally worship the God of the Hebrews, they recognized something extraordinary in the star they observed. This celestial sign led them to seek answers in God’s Word, specifically in the prophecies of Isaiah, and ultimately, it brought them to Jesus.

This illustrates an essential truth: God can call anyone, regardless of their background or beliefs. It’s up to each person to follow. God’s path always leads to His Son, Jesus Christ, as foretold throughout Scripture. From Genesis to the Old Testament prophecies—nearly 100 in all—God pointed to the coming of the Savior who would redeem us.

A Reflection on My Journey

My journey mirrors that of the Magi in many ways. For years, I pursued New Age practices, unaware they were not of God. I relied on crystals to control my emotions, astrology to define my identity, and even dabbled in spell work, thinking it was harmless. These practices seemed spiritual, mysterious, and intuitive, but they failed to give glory to God.

Instead, I’ve come to understand that these practices are often influenced by demonic spirits designed to deceive and keep us from seeking Jesus. As Scripture teaches, deception is Satan’s oldest trick, beginning in the Garden of Eden. Eve didn’t realize she was being deceived when she ate from the forbidden tree, and likewise, we often don’t recognize deception when we’re in the middle of it.

The Danger of Deception

The truth about New Age practices is that they may appear harmless or even helpful, but they lead us away from God. Doreen Virtue, the creator of the popular “Angel Numbers,” is a powerful testimony to this. She believed her practices were spiritual and divine until she surrendered her life to Christ. Now, she warns against the very teachings she once promoted, revealing that these so-called “angels” are often demonic entities disguised as messengers of light.

Demons don’t present themselves as evil; they masquerade as good to draw us away from God. This deception is why so many are led astray, thinking every “spiritual” experience must be from God. But as Doreen and countless others have discovered, the truth is found only in Jesus Christ.

The Call to Truth

The beautiful thing about spiritual seekers is that they are searching for something real. If they truly listen to God’s call, they will find the truth—the truth that God is real, His Word is a guide, and Jesus is the destination of every spiritual journey.

Jesus declared in John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” When we acknowledge this and follow Him, our eyes are opened, and the deception falls away.

The Magi’s Lesson for Us

The story of the Magi teaches that everyone is called, but not everyone responds. Choosing to follow Christ requires denying our own beliefs and embracing His truth. Jesus said in Matthew 12:30, “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” Apart from Christ, we stray, but with Him, we find our true purpose.

Like the Magi, like Doreen Virtue, and like me, those who listen to God’s call will discover that every path of truth leads to Jesus. Will you follow the star to Him?
